Timing and trip length

When is the best time to visit Ha Long?

Ha Long can be visited all year, but March–May and September–November are the most comfortable: less rain, temperatures around 20–28°C and fairly calm water. June–August is beach season, hot and crowded, and storms occasionally suspend boats. December–February is cool with light mist, good for travellers who like quiet days and moody photos of the bay.

How many days do you need in Ha Long?

For a first visit, 2 days 1 night is enough for one bay tour, an evening in Bai Chay and a seafood dinner. If you want to add Sun World, Hon Gai or Yen Tu without rushing, choose 3 days 2 nights. A day trip from Hanoi is possible but tiring, with 5–6 hours of round-trip driving. See the 2-day Ha Long itinerary and the 3-day Ha Long itinerary for half-day plans.

Is it too crowded on weekends and holidays?

Yes. Saturdays, Sundays, 30 April–1 May, 2 September and the summer months are the busiest times at the port, beaches and restaurants. If weekends are your only option, leave Hanoi early, book accommodation 1–2 weeks ahead and take an early-morning boat. Midweek trips are usually calmer, with easier choices of departure times and restaurants.

Getting there and around

What is the easiest way from Hanoi to Ha Long?

The most popular option is a limousine van or high-quality coach, with pickup in the Old Quarter or at a bus station, taking about 2.5–3 hours via the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Ha Long expressway. Groups of four or more can hire a private car for flexible timing. Trains are slow and infrequent, so few travellers use them. Compare options in how to get from Hanoi to Ha Long.

How do you get around in Ha Long?

In Bai Chay, the walking street, beach and Sun World are a few hundred metres to 2–3 km apart, so you can walk or use a ride-hailing app. Crossing Bai Chay Bridge to Hon Gai takes about 10–15 minutes, and Tuan Chau port is about 15–25 minutes away. Rented electric scooters are a light option if you are comfortable riding short distances.

Where to stay

Which area should first-timers stay in?

First-timers usually pick Bai Chay because it is close to the beach, walking street, night market and Sun World, and only minutes from the international cruise port. Hon Gai is quieter and suits travellers who like local eateries and softer prices. Tuan Chau works if you take an early cruise or prefer a self-contained resort area. Details are in where to stay in Ha Long.

What should you look for in a hotel?

Four practical criteria: distance to the beach and cruise port, a lift and parking, rooms with good windows, and recent reviews about cleanliness. Families with young children should look for twin rooms or family rooms. Read how to choose a hotel in Bai Chay for a full checklist before booking.

How long does a Ha Long Bay tour take?

Day boats follow two main routes. Route 1 takes about 4 hours and passes Fighting Cocks Islet, Incense Burner Islet and the Thien Cung and Dau Go caves. Route 2 takes about 6 hours and adds Sung Sot Cave, Dong Tien Lake and Ti Top Island. If you have extra time, choose route 2 or an overnight cruise. Compare them in Ha Long Bay route 1 or route 2.

Day boat or overnight cruise?

Day boats are flexible and economical, suiting a 2-day trip. Overnight cruises offer a slower experience: sunset on deck, kayaking, squid fishing and sunrise in the middle of the bay, but they cost much more and need booking ahead. If anyone in your group gets seasick, try a day boat before committing to a night on the water.

How much are bay tickets?

Recent reference prices put the bay sightseeing ticket for adults at about 290,000 VND (route 1) to 340,000 VND (route 2) per person, excluding the boat. A shared or group boat usually adds about 150,000–300,000 VND per person depending on the vessel. Kayaking is charged separately. Prices can change, so check again at the port before buying.

Do you need to book a boat in advance?

On weekdays you can buy tickets and join a shared boat at Ha Long International Passenger Port in Bai Chay. On weekends, holidays or with a large group, book ahead through a reputable operator to get your preferred departure time. Always ask whether life jackets, sightseeing tickets and meals are included before paying.

Costs

How much does a 2-day, 1-night trip cost?

A mid-range estimate per person from Hanoi: round-trip transport 400,000–700,000 VND, one night sharing a room 400,000–900,000 VND, bay tour with boat 450,000–650,000 VND, food 400,000–700,000 VND and about 200,000 VND for extras. The total is roughly 1.9–3.2 million VND per person. Overnight cruises or peak season will cost more.

How can you save money without missing out?

Travel midweek, book accommodation early, join a shared boat rather than chartering one, and eat seafood at markets or local restaurants with posted prices. Staying near the centre lets you walk and cuts transport costs. Asking the price per kilo before seafood is cooked is the simplest way to avoid surprises.

Food

Which Ha Long specialities should you try?

Worth trying: hand-pounded squid cakes, sá sùng peanut worms, ngán clams, geoduck, crab, mantis shrimp and many kinds of snails. For breakfast, try rice rolls with squid cake or mantis shrimp noodle soup. Squid cake is the most popular food gift; choose a shop that vacuum-packs and keeps it chilled. See what to eat in Ha Long for dishes and places by area.

Ha Long

How do you avoid being overcharged for seafood?

Choose restaurants with clear per-kilo price boards, ask the price before ordering and watch the weighing. Agree on the cooking style and any cooking fee. Photograph the price board or the provisional bill. Avoid following touts on the street. A restaurant busy with locals is usually a better sign than one full only of tourists.

Weather and safety

Do boats run in rain or storms?

When there are strong winds, a tropical depression or a storm, the authorities suspend boat permits for the bay, and this applies to every vessel. In light rain boats run normally. If you travel in July–September, watch the forecast 2–3 days ahead and choose accommodation that allows flexible changes.

What can you do in Ha Long on a rainy day?

On a rainy day, visit the Quang Ninh Museum and the Planning Exhibition Palace in Hon Gai, browse Ha Long 1 Market, try cafés overlooking the bay or head to indoor entertainment. If the rain stops in the afternoon, boats often restart according to port announcements. See things to see in Ha Long to choose suitable stops.

Is swimming at Bai Chay safe?

Bai Chay beach and the Sun World beach have lifeguards during set hours, with shallow and fairly calm water. Swim only inside the buoyed area, and avoid swimming after a big meal or when warning flags are up. Young children always need an adult and a life jacket. Do not go into the water at night.

Travelling with children and older relatives

Is Ha Long suitable for young children?

Yes, if you keep the schedule light. Children usually enjoy boats, caves, the beach and Sun World. Choose route 1 instead of route 2 to avoid fatigue, and bring hats, sunscreen, motion-sickness medicine and snacks. Skip the Ti Top climb with kids under six. See Ha Long with young children for detailed tips.

Which places suit older travellers?

Older travellers should prioritise route 1 boats, the Queen Cable Car, seaside walks in Bai Chay and seafood dinners. Caves with many steps such as Thien Cung or Sung Sot are best taken slowly with rests. Ti Top Island has about 400 steps, so think carefully. Choose accommodation with a lift and close to the sights.

Preparing for the trip

What should you pack for Ha Long?

  • ID card or passport for hotel check-in and boarding
  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and a light jacket for evenings on the bay
  • Shoes with good grip for caves, sandals for the beach
  • Motion-sickness medicine, a power bank and a waterproof bag
  • A compact raincoat in summer or July–September

Do you need cash?

Most hotels, larger restaurants and ticket offices accept cards or bank transfers. Still, carry about 500,000–1,000,000 VND in cash for small eateries, markets, parking or purchases on board. ATMs are easy to find in Bai Chay and Hon Gai, but there are none out on the bay.
